The Story Of Ding, Ang Bato!
Wikipedia revealed that Darna is a Filipino superheroine. It was created by Mars Ravelo and Nestor Redondo, a writer and an artist.
The character first appeared in the Pilipino Komiks (Ace Publications, Inc.) #77 in 1950. Ravelo’s earlier character, Varga, was retooled to Darna with stories he wrote and illustrated himself.
In 1951, Darna switched from comics to cinema while the comic book serial was still written. Royal Publications made the production of the first Darna film under Fernando Poe Sr., starring Rosa Del Rosario as Narda/Darna.
It was Fernando Poe Sr’s last film to be directed. Afterwards, many actors and actresses took on the superheroine in cinema and television.
Some movies were made in 1973, which starred the future multi-awarded dramatic actress and politician Vilma Santos.
In this context, Darna’s origin changed, and Narda became Darna. A twist to the original movie in which she only helped in channelling her.
A stone comes out of Narda’s mouth whenever she changes back. She needed to swallow whenever she intended to transform. This was according to a revision that became the standard for the following incarnations.
Darna is not specified as coming from Marte. It was only mentioned as a “Warrior of Light”. In this context, Narda aged from a child to her early teens, with only Ding noticing her secret.
The Darna character that is best known to people lasted about three decades. And the catchphrase was later popularized in the films and said by Narda runs, “Ding, Ang Bato!”
