Each summer once we’ve eaten our fill of fresh blackberries, we make Blackberry Freezer Jam, Blackberry Syrup, Homemade Gluten-Free Blackberry Crisp, Blackberry Simple Syrup, and of course, Ginger Beer Mocktails garnished with blackberries.
And even after we’ve enjoyed all of those things, there are still more blackberries! That’s why freezing blackberries for future delicious recipes and snacks is a no-brainer!
What is the Best Way To Freeze Blackberries?
Freezing the berries individually so they don’t clump up in a freezer bag is the best and easiest way to freeze blackberries.
Do You Wash Berries Before You Freeze Them?
Yes! A good rinse will remove fluff and plant debris, which nobody wants in their blackberries.

Rinse your blackberries in a colander and set aside to drain and air dry a bit.
Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or a silpat.
Add the blackberries to the baking sheet and place the tray in the freezer. Pro tip: If you have a lot of blackberries to freeze at once, lay another piece of parchment on top of the berries and top with an additional layer of fruit.
Freeze for about six hours.
Break apart any clumps that have formed on the baking sheet and transfer the blackberries to freezer-proof storage.
If you’re using Ziploc-style bags, removing additional air from the bag will keep your berries safe from freezer burn. Sure, there are expensive machines to remove air from freezer storage containers, but with a simple straw, you can achieve similar results.
Place a straw in the corner of a freezer bag and close the bag as tightly as possible. Suck the air out through the straw 1-2 times and quickly remove the straw and seal the bag.
I really like these silicone freezer bags because they stand upright on their own, making them easy to fill.
How Do You Defrost Blackberries?
It depends on how you plan to use them. If you’re making a smoothie or a Chia Banana Pudding With Blackberry Sauce, there is no need to defrost the blackberries. For desserts, you can leave them in the fridge overnight, or a few hours on the counter at room temperature.
If you’re making jam, you can defrost the blackberries in the microwave on the stove. If you’re making blackberry syrup, go ahead and defrost them in the pot over low heat. Give it an occasional stir, to distribute the thawing juices. There is no need to add additional liquid.
HOW LONG CAN Blackberries BE FROZEN?
You can freeze blackberries in a traditional freezer for up to six months or a deep freeze for a year. Imagine in the dead of winter pulling some berries from the freezer to make this Vanilla Layer Cake With Blackberry Buttercream.
How much would your snowy January day improve with a slice of that beautiful cake?
