Can Garlic Powder Be Made At Home?
Yes, and it’s so very easy to make. You basically start by dehydrating garlic and then putting it in a high-powered blender or food processor. A lower-cost option would be to use a spice/coffee grinder.
If your blender doesn’t have a lot of power, it’s ok, you can still make your own garlic powder! You’ll just need to process the dehydrated garlic longer, taking breaks to scrape down the sides of the blender and to allow the garlic powder to cool down.
I have owned this dehydrator for at least a dozen years, and it has held up beautifully.
I’ve added additional trays over the years and it is a workhorse in summer and fall making things like dried pears, dried rosemary, dried peaches, dried chives, dried apples, dried oregano, dried mint, dehydrated marshmallows, and dehydrated garlic.
How to Make Garlic Salt
Combine three parts salt to one part garlic powder. You can use kosher salt, sea salt, or table salt. When choosing which salt to use, consider how you use garlic salt in your cooking.
For me, using a fine sea salt gives me more flexibility in recipes.

- As long as it is stored in a cool and dry place, your homemade garlic powder will be good for years. Make sure the powder is fully cooled before putting it into an air-tight container to prevent mold.

Dehydrating Garlic

Separate garlic cloves from the head. Remove papery skin.

Cut the root end off of each clove.

Chop cloves with a chef’s knife or in a food processor until chopped in a mostly uniform size.

Spread garlic on dehydrator trays. Use multiple trays for large batches.

If your dehydrator has an herb setting, use that. If not, dehydrate between 100 and 110F.

Rotate trays every few hours, and gently move garlic around on trays to break up any clumps.

Dry until garlic is dry to the touch and will break/snap instead of bend (~6-12 hours).
Making Garlic Powder

Add dehydrated garlic to a high-powered blender or food processor or spice grinder and process until the dried garlic is a fine powder.

The length of time this part of the process takes will depend on the blending/grinding equipment you use.
How to Store Garlic Powder
