How to Unpack After Your Big Move

You’re finally in your new home, surrounded by piles of boxes, and your moving adventure is almost over. However, you still need to unpack everything to make your new house feel like home. Where do you even start? Let us unpack some of our efficient tips and strategies!

Before Your Start Unpacking

Clean up! It’s easier to wipe down shelves, clean windows and mop floors before unpacking everything. If you can’t get into your house early enough to do a thorough cleaning, consider hiring professional cleaners to do the job for you before the movers arrive.

Organize and check your boxes. During the packing process, it’s a good idea to assemble an inventory sheet so you can check everything off when it’s all delivered to your new home. You will also want to pack your items by room and mark your boxes accordingly so movers can place them in the right rooms. Sorting your items will be a piece of cake if everything was properly marked and labeled.

Tackle the Necessities

Your top priority when unpacking is to get your essentials immediately accessible. This typically encompasses items for your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.

Bedroom: After a long day of traveling and packing, you are going to want a good night’s sleep in your own bed. Reassemble the bed frame, unpack your sheets and make up your bed along with the pillows and bedspread. The rest of your bedroom items can wait until tomorrow.

Bathroom: Personal care items, toiletries and medicines should top the list of the most important items to unpack after your move. When packing, keep your toilet paper, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, towels, shower curtains and any other bathroom essentials you’ll need together.

Kitchen: If you have time, it’s a good idea to line the kitchen cupboards and cabinets first. Kitchens tend to take a very long time to unpack and organize properly due to the large number of items that need to be sorted and carefully arranged, so start by unpacking only what you need, including plates, cutlery, pots and pans. Get the major appliances hooked up and plug in any small appliances that will make your life a little easier like the coffee pot and toaster.

Kids and Pets: Older kids can go straight to work on unpacking their rooms with some direction. Younger kids, however, will need to be kept occupied so you can focus on your duties for the day. Simply unpacking some of their favorite toys, books, games and blankets will keep them happy. Pets will also need immediate attention upon arrival so pack adequate pet food, water bowls and their favorite toys in your open-first box.

Using these strategies will help you make the unpacking stage of move much more efficient and less stressful. Before you know it, the boxes will disappear, and your house will begin feeling like a home. Ready to start your home buying journey?
