As the weather begins to cool and leaves litter the ground, all we want to do is pour a warm drink, grab a blanket, and curl up with a great book. And in the fall, we often find ourselves reaching for novels—fictional stories that remind us of what’s true.
This month, the Opportunity Book Club is reading Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Purple Hibiscus tells the story of teenage siblings in Nigeria—children who have a seemingly wonderful life but whose secrets are tearing them apart. The New Yorker described Adichie as “one of the most vital and original novelists of her generation,” and The Washington Post Book World called Purple Hibiscus “breathtaking.”
Opportunity International is familiar with the challenges young people in Nigeria face. Perhaps most pressing, there are more children currently out of school in this West African nation than anywhere else in the world. In 2019, Opportunity launched EduFinance programs in Nigeria to help schools improve their infrastructure, parents keep their children in classrooms, and teachers improve the quality of education they offer. We are determined to make education in Nigeria, and around the world, both accessible and high-quality for all children.
So throw on that sweatshirt, grab a copy of Purple Hibiscus, and join us in reading this story of the turmoil of adolescence and the promise of freedom.
Happy reading!
