Art of Accounting: 170 free checklists

Complimentary access to top ideas and insights — curated by our editors.

My 2023 updated Word file of checklists is now available. There are 145 tax, practice management and personal tip checklists and a Getting Your Affairs in Order Tool Kit with 25 added checklists. They have been updated for this tax season and 2023.

Included are almost all of last year’s, plus added checklists. Some of the extra checklists include what to do immediately after being appointed an executor, a subscription model for providing services, client surveys and cover letters, attributes of staff at any level, reasons why a client may want to sell their business, managing your practice better and some new checklists I’ve developed and used this past year. There are also checklists for colleagues in industry and some really good bankruptcy and M&A advisory services tips.

My approach is simple. When I’m confronted with a new situation, I try to scope out the requirements and what has to be done, and that’s really the start of a checklist. I find using a checklist is invaluable for getting things done effectively, efficiently and on time. You can tell by the wide variety of checklists and how much I depend on them. However, checklists are guides, especially on new assignments. When the situation requires it, I change the checklist to meet the reality of the engagement.

I’ve also updated the reviewers’ individual and business tax return checklists and many others based on calls I’ve received from colleagues who were using my checklists. There’s a lot here. The file is free. Just email me at GoodiesFromEd@withum.com and put “checklists” as the subject. No messages since I do this myself, and it takes time for me to read each message. This is my gift to my profession. To date over 100,000 files have been distributed for free.

Every one of the 170 checklists have been used by me, so they are field tested. The Word file is over 320 pages, 93,000 words and is fully usable, searchable and adaptable any way you want.

Enjoy!
