Climate Risk Certificate Offered By CFA Institute

CFA Institute, a global association of investment professionals, has created a new Climate Risk, Valuation, and Investing Certificate.

The course that leads to the certificate is designed to educate advisors, portfolio managers and financial analysts about climate considerations needed to evaluate investments and to construct portfolios across asset classes, the CFA Institute said.

Registrations for the new certificate will open on Nov. 30. Additional information can be found here.

“Investment firms seeking to adapt to the risks associated with climate change increasingly require staff with specific climate analysis skills, and this new certificate meets that market demand,” the CFA Institute said.

The five courses are included in the certificate program are:

  • Climate Science, Risks, and Regulations

  • Transition Finance

  • Climate and Valuation: Listed Equity and Debt

  • Climate and Valuation: Alternatives

  • Portfolio Management and Stewardship for Climate Risk

The certificate is designed to provide financial professionals with climate-related investment expertise. “This discipline is growing rapidly as investors seek to account for climate-related factors in their investment decision-making processes,” the CFA Institute said.

The course requires about 100 hours to complete. The curriculum and supporting activities are based on models and case studies received from industry professionals and subject-matter experts. Participants will develop an understanding of climate-related investing principles, learning how to apply them in the real world, while building their network among like-minded professionals, the CFA Institute said.

“Our new Climate Risk, Valuation, and Investing Certificate will be insightful, practical, and address the needs of those investment professionals looking to apply climate analysis to investments,” Richard Fernand, head of certificate management at the CFA Institute, said in a statement. “This certificate looks at climate risks from an investment practitioner-oriented viewpoint, addressing the practical application of climate factors in investment decisions.”
