We are happy to announce the launch of a simple plotting tool to compare any two-time series – mutual funds, indices, stocks, gold, oil – any data set with dates and values. The tool is now part of our freefincal investor circle.
Rolling return (lump sum and SIP) calculators along with multiple mutual fund analysis tools are already part of the investor circle (full details below). This addition will allow the use to compare two time series over any duration for a better understanding of risk and reward.
If you go to Google Finance or any other financial portal, you can see a plotting tool for comparing an MF with an index, different MFs, stocks, etc., over the last three months, six months, 1Y, 3Y, 5Y, etc. Some portals also offer a custom date range for comparison.
There are three problems with these portals: (1) The duration options are limited, (2) the options for comparison are limited, and (3) the comparison is often not done right. For example, suppose you are comparing the evolution of a fund and an index over the last two years; things look ok. But when you switch to three years, the fund NAV is flat for a while because the fund is less than three years old. In other words, there is no proper “since inception” graph.
The freefincal plotting tool aims to solve these problems. There are two variants offered:
1. Freefincal Mutual Fund Plotter: This can be used to compare any mutual fund with any NSE index.
2. Freefincal Time Series Plotter: This compares two time series.
Features:
- Choose a custom date for comparison
- Compared to the start date, choose 1Y after the start, 2Y after the start … up to 25Y after the start.
- Compared to the end date, choose the last 1,2,3,4,5,6 month, last 1,2,3, … 25 years.
These are some of the graphs created with the tool.
How do you access the plotting tool? Both tools mentioned above are part of the freefincal investor circle. This is an exclusive space for investors, advisors, fintech employees and students to access financial planning and insurance tools, mutual fund analysis tools, coding strategies and Excel macros for data extraction.
The resources can be used for investment analysis, financial planning, financial advisory, learning, and creating custom versions. Members can also share calculators and other resources and discuss ideas or issues in a private Facebook group.

Most investor problems can be traced to a lack of informed decision-making. We have all made bad decisions and money mistakes when we started earning and spent years undoing these mistakes. Why should our children go through the same pain? What is this book about? As parents, what would it be if we had to groom one ability in our children that is key not only to money management and investing but to any aspect of life? My answer: Sound Decision Making. So in this book, we meet Chinchu, who is about to turn 10. What he wants for his birthday and how his parents plan for it and teach him several key ideas of decision-making and money management is the narrative. What readers say!
Must-read book even for adults! This is something that every parent should teach their kids right from their young age. The importance of money management and decision making based on their wants and needs. Very nicely written in simple terms. – Arun.
