Going home for the holidays can be full of awkward encounters. From getting asked about your love life to heated political conversations, and of course, the dreaded taboo topic: money.
Chime, the country’s most-loved banking app, recently conducted a survey revealing that half of Americans feel anxious, overwhelmed, or awkward when discussing finances. Nearly 70% of respondents avoid being the ones to bring up money with family and friends, mostly in fear of stirring the pot and “starting something.” We’ve all been there.
Chime has been on a mission for more than 10 years to help people make money moves that progress them forward, not hold them back. Instead of having invasive conversations that lead nowhere, Chime is unlocking financial progress this holiday by gamifying the previously taboo topic of money in a fun and meaningful way with its new table topic card game, Dollars & Sense.
This game is going to transform your (sometimes awkward) holiday dinner into a fun game night thanks to 150 thought-provoking prompts, divided into four engaging categories:
Would You Rather: Pretty self-explanatory
- Let your family snoop through your last month’s camera roll, or your last month’s banking and credit card statements?
- Have tips worked into the bill or tip on your own?
That Time When: Storytellers to the front, please. These questions encourage everyone to share their favorite money memories
- What’s been your coolest curbside find? Or do you leave outdoor furniture in the outdoors?
- What’s the most that you’ve ever spent to attend a concert or sporting event?
- How much did gas cost when you first learned to drive?
Tell Me More: We all have ideas about money and these cards will get your family talking about them
- What’s something you’re incredibly cheap about?
- What’s a piece of financial advice people often give that actually makes no sense to you?
- What’s something that costs money, but should be free?
Trivia Questions: Put your financial knowledge to the test.
- Which of the following can negatively impact your credit score? A. Not having any credit cards at all, B// Paying off your credit cards in full each month, C/ Not having much money in savings? (Answer: A. You should have at least one credit card you use regularly even if you never carry a balance)
- Which generation has the highest credit card debt? A. Gen Z, B. Millennials, C. Gen X, D. Boomers (Answer: C. Members of Gen X have an average credit card balance of nearly $10,000)
The winner is the player who was awarded the most cards for favorite answer or correct trivia responses at the end of the game, however, Chime truly does believe that when we start these open and honest conversations about money together, we win together.
“We originally launched our first version of this game in the summer through a social campaign to get Americans over the taboo of talking about money. To our surprise, within days of launch, more than 160,000 people signed up to get their copy of the game. Flash forward to now, we are selling the game in one of the country’s biggest retailers, Walgreens, this holiday season with 100% of Chime’s proceeds being donated to The Hustler’s Guild. This game and its growth story speak to the importance and resonance of Chime’s commitment to supporting our members and everyday Americans on their journey of financial progress.”
– Vineet Mehra, Chime Chief Marketing Officer
