Grab your popcorn, ladies. The Golden Globes, Grammys, SAG awards, and the Oscars are on the calendar. And that means we’re about to get a big dose of best and the worst in formal wear.
Every year, celebrity red carpet wardrobe choices range from “gorgeous, simply gorgeous” to “oh dear, what was she thinking?” Handing out those judgments from the comfort of our couches is generally more fun — to fashion gals, anyway — than seeing who wins which award.
So what will see A-listers wearing on the 2024 red carpet? I have six ideas below, along with some insight from Yenia Hernandez Fonseca, stylist, luxury fashion expert and contributor at Margo Paige. For each style, I’ve also included images of off-the-shelf dresses as examples.
1. Brand-inspired
Last fall, Christian Siriano debuted a collaboration with Bombay Sapphire gin. The collection includes a stunning $9,800 haute couture dress inspired by the Bombay French 75 cocktail. There’s also a $350 cold-shoulder shirt dress, and a $150 clear clutch bag.
I suspect we’ll see more designer-brand collabs — and some will find their way to the red carpet. Cocktails, cars, and jewelry could all be inspiration for a clever designer. There’s no doubt brands will throw down cash for these projects if they can find willing designers and celebs. After all, those red carpet impressions are extremely valuable for luxury brands.
Hopefully, the future of this trend will be as tasteful and beautiful as Siriano’s interpretation. I wouldn’t mind seeing Greta Lee wearing an Audi-inspired dress with sleek lines and high-end fabrics, for example. But then, I don’t want to see Ayo Edebiri dressed up in something that looks like an expensive kitchen appliance.
2. Fairy princess aka girlcore
Girlcore has captured the hearts of many as of late. The spring 2024 runways were loaded with girly details, such as ribbons, tulle, soft pastels, sheer layers, and drapey silhouettes. The Rodarte Spring 2024 lookbook went big on florals, lace, and bows. And the 2024 Met Gala will celebrate dozens beautiful, historic, and fragile fashion pieces under the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
Based on those clues, we’re sure to see dreamy, fluttery, girly gowns on the red carpet this year. Which A-listers will opt for the fairy princess theme? I’m hoping for Victoria Beckham and Spider-Man’s Laura Harrier. I’d love to see both in pretty pastels.
3. Menswear
Fashion routinely gives us protagonists and antagonists. This year’s story pits girlcore against menswear-inspired pieces — and it’s amazing. For us regular folk, we can confidently pair a pretty pink slip dress with a boxer-shouldered blazer or chunky loafers. What’s better than an outfit that contradicts itself? Only an on-trend outfit that contradicts itself.
2024 spring collections from Peter Do, Ferragamo, and Proenza Schouler all included masculine details such as blazers, pleated trousers, suit sets, and more. Peter Do’s line-up is particularly masterful in its blend of hard and soft elements.
This aesthetic should show up on the red carpet in the form of formal lapels, pants, and coordinating jackets.
4. Winter whites
Head-to-toe white will be another memorable red carpet style of 2024. While we saw nods to bridal-themed whites in the spring 2024 collections by Prada, Jil Sander, and Emilia Wickstead, Fonseca sees a different white theme taking shape. She sees celebs wearing white as a call for peace around the world.
My best guess for the wearer of a peace-making white gown on the red carpet is JLo. After all, she looks amazing in white and loves to redefine herself again and again. A white gown would be a fitting next chapter after Lopez wore a metal breastplate at Elle’s 2023 Women in Hollywood Awards last year.
5. Metallics
Celebs will also dazzle in metallics this year. The range will be broad, too — as it was on the spring 2024 runways. We saw everything from all-over sequins to chrome-like fabrics to soft copper gowns. I predict that some of our favorite celebrity looks will include interesting uses of metallic textures, paired with ultra feminine hair and makeup.
6. Ball gowns
Last, but not least, is the traditional ball gown. You know, fitted bodice and full skirt — the type of piece that inspires you to waltz. These dresses will likely include other style conventions on this list. We might see an all-white ball gown, for example, or a full formal gown in a shimmery fabric with pretty tulle flowers on the skirt.

Red carpet style outlook
You, me, and the entire fashion world eagerly await another year of memorable red carpet moments. Not just because awards-show style and beauty decisions are fun to judge, but also because A-listers can inspire what you and I wear everyday. Remember when Margot Robbie wore a pink-and-lace Chanel at last year’s Golden Globes, and we all fell in love with soft pink again? And that was before Barbie premiered in July.
So here’s to loving and hating celebrity red-carpet looks this year. And stretching our own style chops in the process.
