Peter created a large rice farm in Karamoja, Uganda. He has six acres of land to maintain where he grows rice, sugar cane, cabbages and onions to provide an income to support his ten children.
With a loan from his Savings Group, Peter was able to plant half of his six acres with rice and hire workers to help him tend to it.
Although the loan was helpful, Peter’s farm still faces many challenges. Rice is only harvested once a year, so if it is destroyed by the harsh weather, his family loses out.
By supplementing his income with other vegetables Peter is trying to plan for the future, but growing and harvesting crops can be a slow, difficult process.
“I hope one day that I may buy a tractor. Having a tractor would save me a lot of time, and it could help me plant on even more land.”
Soon, Peter hopes he may take out a loan to buy a tractor and buy silos to store his crops. This will build his income, and make his family more resistant to the harsh climate!
