As I always say, there is a LOT of competition for remote jobs. For this reason, you want a resume that’s strong and will stand out.
However, creating the perfect resume can be an extremely time-consuming and confusing task if you are not sure about how best to present yourself to employers.
That’s where AI tools like ChatGPT give you an edge!
I understand that many people (myself included) have confused feelings on AI, but it’s here to stay whether we like it or not. I have decided it’s best we work with it rather than against it when it benefits us.
Below, I’ll explain to you how to use ChatGPT to create a resume that genuinely shows your professional strengths.
Why ChatGPT for Your Resume?
ChatGPT is more than a chatbot; it is a powerful tool that will assist you in creating, editing, and perfecting content, including resumes, in record time.
While I don’t recommend it for anything that is “cheating” — don’t use it on school assignments for example — I do understand it can be a handy tool for other things.
Here is why ChatGPT will help when working on your resume:
- Saves Time: You are able to get a good first draft of your resume within minutes! You may want to tweak what it spits out, but the bones of it will be there.
- Customization: This allows you to tailor your resume to different job applications through different formats and wording.
- Eliminates Writer’s Block: If you are stuck on describing your experience or skills, ChatGPT can generate key phrases and wording ideas.
Step One – Give ChatGPT your basic information:
Tell ChatGPT you need to create a resume. Then, give it the following:
- Your name, contact information
- Summary of your professional experience
- Job titles and descriptions from previous positions held
- Skills, education, and relevant certifications you might have
After you’ve given the above details, ChatGPT will organize them into a proper resume structure. For example:
Prompt:
“I need a resume written. My name is Jane Doe, and I’m a marketing manager with five years of experience at XYZ Company. I specialize in digital marketing, SEO, and content strategy. I have a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, and I have certifications in proofreading and freelance writing. Can you get me a resume?”
This way, ChatGPT can give you a nicely structured draft that you can then improve on.
Step 2 – Tailor the Resume to Any Specific Job
Once the main elements of the resume have been generated by ChatGPT, you can get more specific targeting a job description.
That is where it really shines! ChatGPT will suggest adjusting your resume so that it fits into the main elements of the job being applied for.
For example, if you’re applying for a digital marketing-related job, but the company puts more emphasis on strategy related to social media, you can ask ChatGPT to mention your relevant skills and experience:
Prompt:
“Could you rework my resume to better reflect my social media strategy experience for the following job description: [Insert Job Description Here]?”
Then, ChatGPT will tailor your resume to fit, merging keywords that are most likely to pop into the notice of hiring managers and applicant tracking systems.
Step 3 – Bullet Points for Work Experience
One of the trickiest parts of resume writing involves creating bullet points summarizing the various responsibilities and achievements of any job you held before.
That’s where ChatGPT comes in to help you turn those long job descriptions into punchy, results-driven bullet points.
Prompt:
Following is a list of my responsibilities while working as a Marketing Manager at XYZ Company: Led digital campaigns, analyzed marketing performance, managed social media. Please make at least two bullet points for me from this.
ChatGPT should then give you something like this:
- Led digital marketing campaigns to yield a 25% increase in website traffic.
- Performed analytics on key performance metrics with the intention of driving better marketing strategies forward and saw a 15% increase in conversion rates.
- Managed all social media platforms, increasing the follower base by 30% in six months.
This turns your experience into tangible achievements that grab the employer’s attention. Of course you will want to be sure everything is truthful to your own experience. It goes without saying, don’t put information on your resume that isn’t factual.
Step 4 – Format Your Resume Using ChatGPT
You can also get advice from ChatGPT on how to format your resume. It can give you advice on things like:
- Font Styles and Sizes
- How to arrange sections, such as Work Experience, Skills, Education
- Whether to use a chronological or a functional resume format
For example:
Prompt:
“What’s the best way to format my resume if I want to highlight my skills over work experience?”
ChatGPT can suggest using a functional resume format, which places a greater emphasis on skills — specially if you are changing careers or have some gaps in your employment history.
Step 5 – Review and Polish the Final Draft
Once you have produced and refined your resume with ChatGPT, go through it carefully to make sure it reflects your personal style and does not reflect any AI-generated mistakes. Make sure to:
- Double-check dates and other details to be sure it’s all accurate.
- Make sure the resume reads naturally and isn’t too repetitive.
- Put any finishing touches that reflect your special character and qualifications.
If you are uncertain about any section, you can ask ChatGPT to paraphrase or polish certain parts of the resume.
Prompt:
Q: Can you make that sound more professional: ‘I worked on social media accounts’?.
ChatGPT MAY Suggest: Managed and optimized multiple social media accounts, improving their engagement and audience growth.
This is so helpful if you know what you want to say, but can’t think of a “professional” way to phrase it!
In Conclusion
ChatGPT can make resume creation — which is stressful for most people — super simple.
So if you need to create a new resume or you simply want to update your existing one, ChatGPT can be a very valuable tool to use and save you hours of time.
That said, I firmly believe a human touch is best. There are people out there you can pay to do your resume for you. However, not all of us have the budget for that.
If you don’t, give ChatGPT a try and see if it meets your needs for this.
Good luck!
